From Skills to Self-Reliance: Empowering Uganda’s Youth for Tomorrow

In Uganda, the youth make up the largest portion of the population, yet unemployment remains one of their biggest challenges. Many leave school with limited opportunities, while others never complete their education at all. Without skills, they are left vulnerable to poverty, crime, or exploitation. At Pounds Recreation Centre, we believe that empowerment begins with equipping young people with practical, market-ready skills that allow them to stand on their own feet.

Our skilling programs are designed to turn potential into productivity. Young people at Pounds are trained in tailoring, craft-making, hairdressing, entrepreneurship, and digital skills. These are not just hobbies—they are income-generating trades that provide immediate pathways to self-reliance. A girl who learns tailoring can clothe her community while earning a steady income. A boy who acquires computer skills can access freelance opportunities in the digital economy.

But skills training at Pounds goes beyond technical ability. We instill values of discipline, resilience, and entrepreneurship. Participants learn how to manage money, market their products, and serve their communities. The goal is not just to create workers, but creators—young people who can build businesses, employ others, and break the cycle of poverty.

Take James, for example. Once a school dropout, James joined our craft-making program. Today, he sells handmade jewelry in local markets and online, earning enough to support his siblings. Or Sarah, who joined our digital skills program and now works remotely as a freelance designer. These are living examples of how a small opportunity can open big doors.

Still, the demand is greater than the resources available. Every year, thousands of young people seek opportunities to learn, but many centres, including Pounds, lack the funding to reach all who need it. That is why partnerships and support are critical.

By supporting our skilling programs, you are not just giving training—you are creating livelihoods, empowering independence, and shaping the leaders of tomorrow.
